Huwitt Strydom crowned Braai Champion 2025 at Capegate Shopping Centre
The heat was palpable and the competition fierce as Capegate Shopping Centre concluded another exhilarating installment of its annual CG Braai Challenge. Food lovers flocked from far and wide to witness a showdown that showcased not just culinary skill, but also the spirit and culture of South African braai. After an intense series of high-pressure cook-offs, Huwitt Strydom soared above the rest, claiming the title of Braai Champion 2025 with his innovative coffee-rubbed ribeye steak accompanied by a silky red wine reduction.
The CG Braai Challenge, which has become a hallmark of Capegate’s vibrant events calendar, saw ten ambitious finalists tackle three demanding rounds, all under the critical eyes of esteemed judges, including acclaimed chef Bertus Basson and last year’s champion, Lindley Hendricks. Each challenge put the finalists’ technical skills, originality, and passion for braai to the test, pushing them to deliver dishes that tantalised the taste buds of a lively audience.
“The CG Braai Challenge brings South African food culture and community to life,” remarked Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager at Capegate Shopping Centre. “There’s real heart behind every dish, and the level of passion from our contestants is what makes this event stand out. Huwitt took a bold approach, and it paid off.”
Strydom’s award-winning dish boasted an impressive balance of flavours; the rich, tender beef harmoniously complemented by the bold, sharp depth of the red wine reduction. The judges commended his impeccable control of the coals, masterful timing, and confident flavour combinations that epitomised the essence of a traditional braai.
Notably, the competition saw thrilling performances from the other top finalists. Chad Milne secured second place with his exemplary Chops & Sausage Braai Fusion—an intricately balanced, flavour-packed plate that showcased both flawless technique and tenderness. Alvirno Coetzee clinched third place with his aromatic lamb curry chops, served alongside a classic South African potato salad that quickly became a crowd favourite.
This year’s final round added an unexpected twist, featuring an exhilarating R800 trolley dash through Checkers, a test requiring both strategy and speed. With essential ingredients in hand, the final three contestants had a mere two and a half hours to elevate their signature dishes, solidifying their chances for victory.
Capegate Shopping Centre, situated in the thriving northern suburbs of Cape Town, has rightfully earned its reputation as a hub for retail, community events, and unique local experiences. The CG Braai Challenge not only creates an arena for culinary excellence but also fosters a celebration of community and connection through food.
Strydom’s remarkable achievement comes with an impressive prize bundle valued at R30,000, featuring a luxurious getaway at Kol Kol Mountain Lodge, a Weber braai, vouchers for Capegate and Checkers, a premium meat hamper, and more.
The CG Braai Challenge continues to rise in popularity, attracting top-tier judges, enthusiastic participants, and devoted crowds each year. With an increase in entries anticipated for the 2026 event, the competition’s legacy is set to capture and inspire even more culinary talents.
