The Pietermaritzburg High Court has ruled that African National Congress (ANC) leader Chief Albert Luthuli’s death was a result of injuries caused by an assault.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate died in 1967.

The initial inquest ruled that he was hit by a goods train in Groutville and that no one was to be held accountable.

However, Judge Nompumelelo Radebe has set aside these findings, saying the 1967 inquest was riddled with lies and inconsistencies.

Radebe says the evidence presented before court shows that there was no actual train accident.

She says the police and railway employees worked together to cover up Luthuli’s assault.
