SASSA dismisses viral claim of double social grant payments

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has dismissed a claim that beneficiaries are set to receive double social grant payments.
The agency was responding to a social media post which made the claim.
It added that it is increasingly concerned about the recent misinformation that has gone viral on online communication platforms claiming that there will be double payments in social grants.
“SASSA would like to categorically state that this is not true and the Agency urges all its beneficiaries and public at large not to entertain this information as there has been no announcement of social grants double payment by SASSA or government.”
Paseka Letsatsi, SASSA national spokesperson, urged beneficiaries to only rely on credible sources and to be circumspect of the information they share on social media.
“Before anyone shares any information pertaining to social grants, they must first verify its authenticity to avoid disseminating false information that may cause anxiety and stress to our beneficiaries,” said Letsatsi.
SASSA said social grants are the livelihood of more than 19 million SASSA beneficiaries and false information creates untold panic and stress to the millions of our vulnerable beneficiaries.
“Therefore, we appeal to all South Africans to stop these acts and our beneficiaries to be vigilant and cautious at the information they consume. If you are in doubt, please call our toll-free number, 0800 60 10 11, email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za or engage us on our social media pages.”
