Meat the law: Six suspects caught in ' high-steaks' hijack
A multidisciplinary and cross-border operation led to the arrest of six suspects accused of hijacking a truck, carrying meat valued at over R500,000.
North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh, said the operation, which involved various crime-fighting units including the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Drug Task Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT) Klerksdorp, and private security firms, successfully thwarted a dangerous plot to hijack the vehicle.
She said acting on a tip-off, the team operationalised information regarding a planned hijacking of a truck, transporting meat from Potchefstroom.
“Taking swift action, the combined forces moved in on the suspects moments after the truck was seized. In addition to recovering the hijacked vehicle, the authorities confiscated three other vehicles that were allegedly used in the commission of the crime,” Myburgh said.
The arrested individuals, aged between 28 and 48 years, now face charges of hijacking and kidnapping, and are expected to make their first appearance in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, the Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, praised the collaborative effort of the units involved, crediting the successful operation to their proactive and coordinated approach to crime prevention and response.
“This operation is a testament to our commitment to combat crime effectively through collaboration,” said Naidoo.
