Deadly shootout in Umlazi: Two suspects killed by police

Two men wanted in connection with a string of violent crimes in Inanda and surrounding areas were fatally shot during a gun battle with police in Umlazi on Monday morning.

According to the police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police gathered and acted on intelligence that led them to an informal settlement on Silwane Khoza Road in Umlazi’s D Section.

Netshiunda says that as the police approached, the suspects immediately opened fire on the officers.

“The men of law stamped the authority of the state by returning fire, and during the resultant shootout, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded,” says Netshiunda.

Both suspects were killed in the exchange.

Police recovered two firearms at the scene in possession of the suspects, which will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in other criminal activities across the province.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.
