Limpopo musician Dr Nel found dead after performance: Community united in mourning
Limpopo residents have been left reeling after the death of popular musician and Lekompo artist Molimisi Baaitsi, affectionately known to fans as Dr Nel.
The 31-year-old artist was found dead along Phetogo Drive in the early hours of Sunday, November 2, shortly after performing at the grand opening of a local pub.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and say investigations are under way to determine what led to his death.
The discovery
Provincial police spokesperson in Limpopo, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said officers received a report at around 4 am about a person lying on the road.
“Upon arrival at the scene, police found a male lying face down on the roadway. He was certified dead on the scene by Witpoort Emergency Medical Services personnel,” Ledwaba said.
Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased was last seen alive performing at a local entertainment venue hours before his body was found.
Although the SAPS media statement did not name the deceased, the man has been confirmed by community members and local musicians as Molimisi Baaitsi, a rising star in Limpopo’s vibrant house and Lekompo music scene.
Community in mourning
News of Dr Nel’s death spread rapidly on social media, where fans, fellow artists, and residents expressed disbelief and sorrow.
“He was one of the most humble and talented artists to come from our area,” said a local fan, who described Dr Nel as “a performer with a big heart who always gave back to his community”.
Messages of condolence have poured in from across the province, with many highlighting how Baaitsi’s music had become a staple at weddings, parties, and community events in the Waterberg district.
“Dr Nel represented hope for young musicians in rural Limpopo,” said another artist who had performed alongside him in recent months. “He showed that even from a small village, you could build a name in the music industry.”
Police investigation continues
Police say they are still piecing together the events leading up to the musician’s death. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
“At this stage, the circumstances that led to the incident are under police investigation,” said Colonel Ledwaba.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
“We urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything on that night to contact Detective Sergeant Lesiba Tsebe on 071 466 6558, their nearest police station, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” Ledwaba added. Information can also be submitted via the My SAPS App.
A life and career cut short
Before his untimely death, Dr Nel had built a loyal following through his energetic performances and heartfelt lyrics that blended traditional Limpopo sounds with modern house influences. His music often celebrated local culture and community pride, earning him recognition beyond the borders of the province.
Friends say he was planning to release new music before the end of the year, and had been performing across Limpopo and neighbouring provinces in recent months.
“He was just getting started,” said a close friend. “He had so many plans — collaborations, shows, even mentoring younger artists.”
Call for justice
As investigations continue, many in the local music industry are calling for a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We cannot lose another young artist under unclear circumstances,” said one community leader. “His family and fans deserve answers.”
For now, the village of Botshabelo remains in mourning for a homegrown star whose rhythm once brought people together — and whose silence has left a painful void in Limpopo’s music community.
