WATCH | Crime Intelligence boss Khumalo resumes testimony after illness | Madlanga Commission
Weeks after he fell ill while testifying at the Madlanga Commission SAPS Crime Intelligence head, Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo has returned to the witness stand.
Proceedings were halted on October 1, 2025 after Khumalo fell ill.
He was hospitalised briefly and later discharged to recover at home.
The nature of his illness has not been disclosed.
Khumalo was the third witness to appear before the commission.
The first witnesses included KZN police boss Lt-Gen. Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
His initial testimony focused on the achievements of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) under his command.
However, Khumalo’s return comes amid growing uncertainty over his future as Crime Intelligence head.
Just two weeks after his medical episode, he briefly appeared in the Pretoria Regional Court alongside two co-accused in a fraud and corruption case.
Khumalo and five other senior Crime Intelligence officials are accused of irregularly appointing 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to an executive position within the unit despite her lack of policing experience.
He is currently contesting bail conditions barring him from returning to work.
The case suffered another delay when the presiding magistrate recused himself, postponing Khumalo’s bid to have his bail restrictions relaxed.
That application is expected to be heard later this month, even as Khumalo faces renewed scrutiny before the Madlanga Commission.
Meanwhile, IOL has reported that the police were investigating allegations of an apparent hit reportedly targeting controversial businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni.
