Water Ministry worried about rising typhoid cases in Hammanskraal – SABC News

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation says it is concerned about the recent surge in typhoid cases in Hammanskraal, which had only recently recovered from a cholera outbreak.

A total of 48 typhoid fever cases has been reported in Hammanskraal, Bronkhorstspruit and other parts of Pretoria since January.

According to officials, findings show that the water supply is not the source of contamination, with tests confirming no presence of Salmonella Typhi bacteria in Tshwane’s water systems, including those managed by Magalies and Rand Water.

The ministry met with the City of Tshwane on Monday to assess the progress made by technical teams in managing the outbreak.

Ministry spokesperson Cornelius Monama says they are concerned about the current incidents of typhoid.

In a statement Cllr Eugene Modise says, “As of 31 October 2025 a total of 48 laboratory confirmed cases of typhoid has been reported across the Tshwane District since 1 January 2025 and most of them were recorded in Hammanskraal and Bhonkhorstspruit. This compares to 35 cases over the same period in the previous year. Importantly, no new cases have been detected from since the final epidemiological week of October (20-26 October 2025).”

Former  Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink says , “We therefore call on the City to act quickly to contain the situation, this must include the release of routine tests taken by the Tshwane Department of Water and Sanitation on the Rooiwal, Apies River, and Leeuwkraal water system.”
