Deputy Principal shot outside Dinoto Technical Secondary in Gauteng
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has condemned a shooting incident at Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, where the school’s deputy principal was shot while entering the premises on Friday morning.
According to the department, preliminary reports indicate that the deputy principal was attacked outside the school gate and sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is receiving medical care.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the GDE has deployed psychosocial support teams to the school.
These include officials from the Ekurhuleni North District who are providing counselling to traumatised educators, learners and staff.
Despite the distressing event, the school has continued with the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations under close supervision. The department said the decision was made to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of all learners.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed outrage at the shooting, saying schools should never be places of fear.
“We are deeply shocked by this incident. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for both learners and educators. The Department condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms,” Chiloane said.
He also extended well wishes to the injured educator and urged the police to move swiftly in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“We wish the Deputy Principal a full and speedy recovery, and we urge law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice,” he said.
