G20 Summit in SA to continue without US delegation: Analyst – SABC News

International Relations Analyst Prof Bheki Mngomezulu says the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa will continue with or without the United States (US).

This follows President Donald Trump’s decision not to send any official representative to this year’s G20 meeting.

Trump made the statement in a post on his social media Truth Social, saying as long as the killing of Afrikaners continues, the US will not be part of the summit.

Mngomezulu has dismissed the reasons for Trump pulling out of the summit.

He says, “President Trump not to attend the G20 should not come as a surprise because already he has a position about South Africa saying that , ‘South Africa is killing  white Afrikaners’ which is actually incorrect. The main reason why he’s doing this is because we took Israel to the ICJ (International Court of Justice) which didn’t settle down with him and then also in the case between Russia and Ukraine, we didn’t take a position as was expected, but his absence does not necessarily mean that the G20 will not continue, it will continue with or without him.”

Mgomezulu criticises Trump for using social media to announce the decision of pulling the US out of the G20 Summit.

He says his approach undermines the authority and the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Mgomezulu says, “What President Trump is doing is undermining South Africa’s authority and he’s undermining President Cyril Ramahosa’s authority and he’s even hinting that South Africa should be taken out of the G20.”

“He also has issues with the fact that South Africa is the chair of the G20 saying that this was not supposed to happen in the first place, so which means in his books, South Africa does not have what it takes ,One to be a member of the G20 and 2 to be the chair of the G20,” he adds.

ANC condemns Trump’s ‘genocide’ claims

The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned Trump’s claims of genocide and persecution of white South Africans, along with his boycott of the G20 summit in South Africa.

In a statement, the ANC says his claims and G20 boycott are part of a long and disgraceful pattern of imperial arrogance and disinformation.

Trump has repeatedly said he would not attend the summit in South Africa, which is scheduled for November 22 and 23, due to friction with its host over Pretoria’s policies on land and Israel.

The ANC’s Mahlengi Bhengu clarifies the ANC’s stance.
