The City of Tshwane says cable theft and infrastructure vandalism continue to severely impact service delivery and electricity reliability across its seven regions.

The municipality records around 2 000 unplanned power outages each month, with Regions 1, 3 and 4 most affected.

The city says these crimes cost them an estimated R8 million to R10 million, funds that could have been used for infrastructure upgrades and community projects.

MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo says intensified measures are in place to fight the ongoing problem.

“The City of Tshwane has intensified its efforts and implemented several interventions to combat cable theft and infrastructure vandalism. These include increased security patrols in high-risk areas, particularly in Regions 3, 4, and 1; strengthened collaboration with law enforcement agencies and specialised units to target organised syndicates; as well as ongoing community awareness campaigns to educate residents on the social and economic impact of infrastructure crime.”
