Festive fun: The Princess and the Pea at the Masque Theatre
The festive season has officially started at The Masque Theatre in Muizenberg, and it’s sizzling with a brand-new adventure: The Princess and the Pea! This year, the theatre is serving up a mix of fairytale fun, music, laughter, and a little magic for kids, parents, and grandparents alike.
The story follows Princess Anika, who must learn how to be a fair and wise ruler. Eli, a young hero, has to find his courage, and Stefan realises there’s more to him than just looking good. Meanwhile, Pepper, the lively royal chef, is shaking up the kitchen and showing everyone that sometimes you need to rip up the recipe and make your own rules.
The show is packed with music that will make you want to dance in your seat. From Freshlyground, Jesse and Johnny Clegg, and from Shekhinah to Shakira, Adam Lambert, Meghan Trainor, and even some Disney favourites, there’s a little bit of everything for everyone.
“I wanted to make a story that’s sweet, a little nutty, and full of fun for the whole family,” said Savannah Steyn, the writer and director of the show. “With our quirky cast and a sprinkle of Masque magic, it’s a fairytale feast you won’t forget.”
Savannah has been part of The Masque for years, starting out as a Production Secretary Intern and working her way up to stage manager, set designer, and now writer and director. She says this show is extra special because she’s putting everything she has learned into one sparkling adventure.
The show also features musical direction by Lara Basson, a talented musician who has been part of the Cape Town theatre scene for over a decade. Together with the cast, she brings the songs to life in a way that will have audiences singing along.
Performances are set from 12 December to 11 January. Evening shows are on 12, 13, 18, 19, 20 December and 8–10 January at 7:30pm, and matinees are on 13, 14, 16, 20, 21 December and 10–11 January at 2:30pm.
