R10 million insurance murders: Ex-cop and family remanded in jail until October 2026
A Limpopo man accused of being part of a family network behind a series of insurance-related murders briefly appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where his case was postponed for a bail application, according to NPA regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi.
Leshweng Johannes Shokane, 53, was arrested on 4 November and faces nine counts of murder, as well as charges of money laundering, receiving the proceeds of unlawful activities and defeating the ends of justice.
Malabi said Shokane is the brother of former police officer Rachel Raesetsa Shokane Kutumela, 43, and Annah Shokane, 47, and the uncle of 23-year-old Madjadji Flora Shokane. All are from Moletjie Makgofe outside Polokwane.
According to Malabi, Rachel and Annah allegedly took out fraudulent life and funeral insurance policies for several victims between 2013 and 2022, later claiming payouts of about R10 million. The payouts were made by multiple service providers, including ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, One Life and Clientele.
She said the proceeds were allegedly shared among the accused, including Madjadji and Leshweng Johannes Shokane.
Malabi said the defence requested a postponement to allow for consultations ahead of Leshweng Johannes Shokane’s bail application and to have him sent for mental observation in terms of section 77 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
The bail hearing is expected to take place on 9 December, and Leshweng Johannes Shokane will remain in custody until then.
Meanwhile, Malabi confirmed that the trial of Rachel, Annah and Madjadji has been transferred to the Polokwane High Court, where it is scheduled to run from 5 to 30 October 2026. They will remain in custody pending the start of the trial.
