MK Party demands justice following tragic shooting in Soweto: one member killed, two injured
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has expressed shock and outrage following a deadly shooting at Dube Hostel in Soweto on Saturday afternoon which claimed the life of one member and left two others injured.
The incident occurred during an MK Party recruitment campaign drive event. According to a statement issued by the party, three members came under fire during the outreach programme.
One member died at the scene after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Another was treated at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and discharged later that evening, while the third remains in critical condition.
The party said police have since launched investigations into charges of attempted murder and murder.
The MK Party conveyed its condolences to the family of Comrade Nzuza, who was killed, and extended support to the families of the injured members. It said it is cooperating fully with authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The party also condemned what it described as acts of political intolerance and intimidation, asserting that it will not allow the creation of “no-go zones” in Gauteng or anywhere else in the country.
“Our country has endured a long and painful journey from the days of political violence in trains, hostels and communities; we refuse to allow a return to that era,” the statement said.
The MK Party confirmed it will also officially report the attack to the Electoral Commission of South Africa.
While strongly denouncing the violence, the party urged its members and supporters not to retaliate.
“Ours is a peaceful revolution dedicated to the complete liberation of black people, in particular. Our mission is to free even those who oppose us from mental bondage and lead society toward genuine freedom, equality and the restoration of dignity for all.”
