Severe thunderstorms expected across Gauteng tonight and Tuesday

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms across Gauteng tonight.

Forecasters say residents should prepare for heavy downpours, possible localised flooding and large hail as unstable conditions intensify across the province.

Senior Forecaster, Samkelisiwe Thwala, says the storms are expected to persist into the night, with the northern parts of Gauteng set to receive the most widespread rainfall.

“Weather-wise for tonight, we are starting with mostly scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Gauteng province. However, we are expecting widespread showers and thundershowers over the Northern part for tonight. We also have a warning associated with these thunderstorms over Gauteng where we are expecting Yellow Level 4 for severe thunderstorms that are accompanied by heavy downpours, possible flooding as well as large amounts of hail that is expected to persist for the remainder of the evening,” says Thwala.

Joburg EMS ready for emergencies, says on high alert as rains persist:

Storms are expected to continue into Tuesday, bringing thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.

“We are (expecting) mostly scattered showers and thundershowers across the province. Cool temperatures can be expected also expecting Level 4 Warning for the northeastern part for severe thunderstorms and a Yellow Level 2 Warning across the province,” adds Thwala.

Meanwhile the families of missing flood victims who were swept away during heavy rains last night at New Hanover in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands are desperate to find their loved ones.

The inclement weather has left over a 100 people homeless and severely damaged public infrastructure.
