Lebeya had ‘never before’ called me about live operation: Hawks boss
Gauteng Hawks Head Ebrahim Kadwa says retired National Hawks Head General Godfrey Lebeya had “never before” called him about a live operation.
General Kadwa, who has concluded his testimony at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria, has testified that General Lebeya called him regarding the takedown operation at Katiso “KT” Molefe house in December 2024.
Lebeya’s name has consistently been mentioned by witnesses who allege that he was the one who ordered Hawks members to go and verify the police operation in Sandhurst, Gauteng.
General Kadwa has told Commissioner Sesi Baloyi SC that General Lebeya had normally called him about operational matters.
Commissioner: Is it common and has it ever happened before that General Lebeya called you to ask to verify an operation of the Hawks. In your recollection?
Kadwa: General Lebeya would not have called me previously with a similar kind of situation. He would call me before as the provincial head to basically follow up or get feedback on operational matters, high level investigations we are conducting. In certain cases to verify a report we made. He is very pandentic in that regard.
Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has told evidence leaders that he hopes that Lebeya will testify at the inquiry.
Justice Madlanga addresses evidence leader, Adv Thabang Pooe, saying, “But as I say, I hope at some stage, we will hear from General Lebeya, because I think that’s where all of this comes from. Chair, not to pre-empt the witnesses’ testimony, but once they are done, then all fingers will point in one direction and then we will conclude the section with that individual.”
