Maharaj hails Sunny Singh as steadfast democrat
Anti-apartheid activist and former government minister, Mac Maharaj, says the late Sunny Singh never faltered in his fight for democracy and did not allow political ambition to cloud his judgement.
Maharaj paid tribute to the late Singh at his special official provincial funeral at Kendra Hall in Durban.
Singh passed away last Thursday at the age of 86.
Maharaj praised Singh’s character, saying that he always made time to check up on his comrades, their families and friends.
Maharaj says Singh’s commitment to liberation was extraordinary.
“Sunny never succumbed to that dream temptation. He served wherever and whenever and in whatever capacity he was needed. He served as a foot soldier and as a leader, but he never made leadership an ambition. He understood that at the heart of the renewal of our organization, there needs the need is to restore the critical interconnection between a leader and an organizer, that the forward movement of our country requires a deepening of our democracy by making it participatory.”
