Yellow Level 4 severe weather warning issued for Mpumalanga

The South African Weather Service says a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and excessive lightning is expected over the Highveld of Mpumalanga and northern Gauteng.

It says a Yellow Level 2 warning is in place for southern Gauteng, the eastern parts of the Free State, the south-western parts of Limpopo and in places over the Highveld and southern escarpment of Mpumalanga.

Storms are expected to continue across Gauteng into Tuesday, bringing thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.  Senior Forecaster Samkelisiwe Thwala says parts of Gauteng remain at risk of damaging thunderstorms.

“We are mostly scattered showers and thundershowers across the province. Cool temperatures can be expected, also expecting level four warning for the northeastern part for severe thunderstorms and a yellow level two warning across the province.”

Meanwhile,  a search continues for two people who were swept away in flash floods at uMshwathi outside Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

This comes after heavy rain battered the area on Sunday night, leaving houses and roads severely damaged. Rescue teams also found the body of a woman in her 40s on Monday.
