Johannesburg Water says ageing infrastructure and unattended leaks remain a major challenge across the city, despite improved technology to detect and manage water losses.
The utility showcased its leak detection programme to the media on Wednesday, demonstrating how advanced tools are used to locate bursts and reduce wastage.
Johannesburg Water’s Demand Management team’s Thega Kandasamy explains why community cooperation remains crucial.
“While Johannesburg may invest heavily in technology and proactive leak detection, residents play a very vital role in safeguarding our water resources. We continuously encourage all households and businesses to use water sparingly, fix household leaks promptly, and report bursts and leaks in open areas. Also avoid unnecessary water use especially during the peak demand periods. So, together, if we work hand in hand as the City of Johannesburg and its residents, we can protect our limited water resources and ensure a reliable and sustainable supply for all.”
