Parents, pupils warned against ‘pens down’ parties

The Gauteng Education Department has warned against ‘pens down’ parties as matric examinations are concluded.

It says risky behaviour, such as abusing alcohol, leads to dangerous incidents.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says, “We are discouraging the pens down parties which might end in eventualities [casualties]. We have been saying to candidates, you can celebrate, but responsibly. No alcohol, no parties that would end up with eventualities [casualties]. So far we are quite happy.”

The department also says its only concern during the examinations was absenteeism among part-time candidates.

Mabona adds: “Generally, we have been doing very well besides the absenteeism of part-time candidates, which we would encourage that if you enrol that you are going to write; you must prepare and make sure that you go and write.”
