Former Kruger ranger trial over 2016 rhino poaching returns to court

Former Kruger National Park regional ranger, Rodney Landela and his co-accused, Kenneth Motshotsho, have appeared in the Skukuza Regional Court as their long-running rhino poaching trial returned to court.

The two are facing multiple charges linked to the killing and dehorning of a white rhino in the Kingfisher Spruit area of the Kruger National Park in 2016.

Defence counsel has argued that the credibility of the forensic and physical evidence is deeply flawed, telling the court that the prosecution has not produced enough verified proof directly linking the men to the crime.

The defence Mswazi Makhubela says the state appears to be relying on the possibility that the accused may contradict themselves when they present their statements or during cross-examination.

“A further contradiction or inconsistencies among the three witnesses partisans whether accused one was handcuffed from scene one till the police station this is going to be important especially on determining whether the offense of escaping.”
