Massive hailstorm hits uMshwathi Municipality in KZN Midlands
A massive hailstorm has hit the uMshwathi Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, damaging a number of houses.
The area was also battered by heavy rains two weeks ago, which left one person dead.
Two are still missing.
More than 100 people were displaced. Most were from the Shiyabazali informal settlement, which authorities say is built on a flood plain.
Disaster management teams remain on high alert as more rains are expected in parts of the KZN Midlands.
Umshwathi Local Municipality Disaster Management Spokesperson, Skhumbuzo Nxumalo has urged residents to heed weather warnings.
“I was at Umshwathi to assess the situation and I saw that the river is overflowing. I am asking the local residents not to sleep next to the river banks. Nobody is allowed to rebuild their structures following the recent rains.”
Weather warning: Severe thunderstorms with a high likelihood of minor impacts of heavy rain, localised flooding, damaging winds & a possibility of Hail and excessive lightning.
