The Blitzboks are facing an anxious wait over the fitness of two key players as they prepare for this weekend’s Cape Town Sevens.
Selvyn Davids and Ryan Oosthuizen both failed to finish last weekend’s Dubai Sevens, raising concerns as the team returns to Cape Town Stadium for one of the showpiece events on the global circuit.
Davids, the Blitzboks’ first-choice playmaker and one of the most influential attackers in world sevens rugby, is battling a groin strain picked up in Dubai. The 31-year-old is central to South Africa’s attacking rhythm and tempo, and any absence would be a major blow to their Cape Town ambitions.

Oosthuizen, 30, missed the final day of the tournament due to illness, leaving the coaches hoping he recovers in time to anchor the pack. The powerful forward is one of the squad’s most experienced and reliable campaigners, and his physicality will be crucial against top-tier teams.
The situation is uncomfortably familiar: Oosthuizen suffered a concussion at the Dubai event last season, which forced him out of the Cape Town tournament a week later.
The Blitzboks will finalise their squad later this week, but with the SVNS action returning to South African soil on Saturday and Sunday, all eyes will be on the medical updates of two players who form the spine of the national side.
