eThekwini says water safe, but Athlone Park under precautionary boil alert
The eThekwini Municipality has moved to calm concerns over tap water quality following a localised boil water alert affecting parts of the city’s southern region.
The Municipality insisted that drinking water across the city remains safe.
“The Municipality wishes to reassure all residents that the quality of our potable water remains safe and fully compliant with the requirements of SANS 241 for drinking water quality,” it said in a statement.
The alert, issued over the weekend, applies only to the Athlone Park supply zone and does not extend to surrounding areas.
“The notice is intended only for the areas mentioned and does not affect the entire Southern Areas.”
Areas impacted include Athlone Park, Galleria Mall, Arbour Crossing and Kingsway Hospital.
Officials said the action was precautionary after routine testing detected water quality levels below acceptable standards.
Teams reportedly acted quickly to investigate and undertake corrective work. Water quality is now improving, but authorities say the boil alert will remain in place while further testing continues.
The Municipality urged residents not to rely on unofficial information as updates continue. “We encourage residents to rely on official municipal channels for accurate updates,” the statement added.
