LOOK: Thief dumps R1.3 million Jeep Gladiator on N1 in Limpopo as police move in
Police in Limpopo are searching for criminals after a white Jeep Gladiator reported stolen in Polokwane was found abandoned along the N1 highway.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said members of the Mahwelereng Flying Squad were conducting visible patrols when they received an alert about a stolen vehicle linked to the Westernburg policing area.
“Officers immediately activated a search, and the white Jeep Gladiator was spotted next to the weighbridge along the N1. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen on Sunday, 30 November,” said Ledwaba.
He said the driver managed to flee before police arrived.
“The driver of the stolen vehicle was nowhere to be found, and the Jeep was subsequently taken to Mokopane SAPS for further handling,” Ledwaba added.
No arrests have been made.
Police have urged anyone with information that may help track down the suspect to contact the SAPS on 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App.
On Monday, IOL reported that two foreign nationals were arrested in Limpopo after police intercepted a Toyota Corolla Cross GR that had been reported stolen in the Pretoria CBD and was allegedly being smuggled toward the Zimbabwean border.
The SAPS Limpopo Tracking Team, working with Shadowsecure Security, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Tracker SA, launched an anti-smuggling operation on Sunday after receiving intelligence that the vehicle was travelling from Gauteng towards the Beitbridge port of entry along the N1.
The vehicle, valued at around R600,000, was spotted on the N1 North near the Mall of the North in Polokwane. Officers stopped it and confirmed through preliminary checks that it had been reported stolen in Pretoria Central.
Inside were two men — a 38-year-old Zimbabwean and a 43-year-old Malawian — who were arrested on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
