Parliament concerned by threats against MPs
Parliament has expressed serious concern over threats and intimidation against Members of Parliament. These include recent incidents in the Ad Hoc Committee looking into concerns around national security and oversight activities by SCOPA members.
This follows a letter written to National Assembly Speaker by the MK Party reporting the kidnapping of its member, Vusi Shongwe, last week.
He is an alternative member of the Ad Hoc Committee. The party says his three cellphones were taken and he paid a substantial amount of money.
“Parliament has noted with great concern the incidents of intimidation and threats directed at Members of Parliament in the course of their work. While the latest outcry has emerged during the processes of the Ad Hoc Committee, similar threats have also been made against Members of SCOPA and others during oversight activities. Parliament is aware of, and supports, the steps taken by members who have reported these matters to their local police stations. We trust that the South African Police Service will investigate and address these cases expeditiously,” says Parliament Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo.
