Berea detective out on bail after alleged R9,000 extortion plot
A Durban police officer has been released on R2,500 bail after he was arrested for extortion.
Sergeant Marcel Dorasamy, an officer stationed at Berea SAPS detective branch, appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
“The arrest follows a complaint from a member of the public, who alleged that the officer demanded she pay R4,000 in exchange for ensuring that her son is not arrested,” said Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Lizzy Suping.
The woman claimed that Dorasamy further demanded she pay him R5,000 for the docket to be closed.
Suping said the complainant then informed the accused officer that she could only afford an amount of R2,500 at the time, and would pay the remainder of the balance the following month.
The woman complained to Ipid, who then obtained approval from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to conduct an undercover operation.
“Sergeant Dorasamy was then arrested when he arrived at the agreed location in Phoenix to collect the R2,500 as promised,” Suping explained.
Dorasamy is due to appear in court in February next year.
