The latest CPJ data shows that 122 journalists and media workers were killed in 2025, down slightly from 126 the previous year, with the Israel-Gaza war behind 43% of fatalities.

The latest data from the Committee to Protect Journalists shows that 122 journalists and media workers were killed in 2025, down slightly from 126 the previous year, with the Israel-Gaza war behind 43% of fatalities.

By far the biggest cause of death was the war in Gaza, with 52 workers killed and two others missing this year. Yemen has also been a major cause of death for members of the press, with 32 dead and four disappearing.

In total, over the past 20 years, 1,766 journalists and media workers have died reporting from the front lines of some of the most dangerous places on Earth.
