Another match has been added to next year’s much-anticipated Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour.

History will be made during with confirmation that the Springbok Women will face New Zealand’s Black Ferns for the first time on South African soil.

The landmark Test will form part of a blockbuster double-header at FNB Stadium on 5 September, serving as the curtain-raiser to the third Test between the Springboks and All Blacks. It will be only the third meeting between the nations’ women’s sides, following World Cup clashes in 2010 and 2025.

Their most recent encounter – a tense 2025 World Cup quarter-final eventually won 46-17 by New Zealand – showcased just how far the Bok Women have come. With the scores locked at 10-10 at half-time, the South Africans pushed the six-time world champions to the limit before New Zealand eventually pulled clear on their way to the final.

With the domestic women’s game surging and a crowd of more than 90,000 expected at FNB Stadium, the fixture promises to be another watershed moment for SA women’s rugby.

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer said the match is a testament to the team’s rapid rise.

“Our Springbok Women made history in England with a best-ever World Cup performance and broke into the world’s top 10 for the first time.

“For them to face the Black Ferns in South Africa, as part of a double-header before the Boks and All Blacks, is fantastic. I want to thank all involved for helping get this match over the line.”

Springbok Women coach Swys de Bruin said the challenge is exactly what his side needs, saying: “We want to become the best by playing the best. Facing the Black Ferns at FNB Stadium is massive for us and a real marker of our progress heading into a new World Cup cycle.”

New Zealand Rugby CEO Mark Robinson called the double-header “a major addition” to the tour.

“It gives fans an unparalleled opportunity to witness the depth, history and intensity of rivalry between four national teams.”
