Busy week for Lt-Gen Mkhawanazi's men with 13 guns confiscated in KZN
At least 13 firearms, including three rifles and homemade guns, have been recovered in three separate incidents in KwaZulu-Natal this week.
On Tuesday, police officers arrested a 35-year-old man in Verulam.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, a vehicle was tracked leaving Umlazi and travelling along the N2.
“A security company attempted to stop the vehicle in Verulam. However, one of the occupants in the stolen vehicle fired shots with a rifle at the security guards and injured one guard on the leg. The suspects continued to flee, but they were eventually intercepted at Clerence Park by members of the Provincial Task Team as well as Durban K9. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the bush,” Magwaza said.
Searching the abandoned vehicle, police recovered a rifle and more than 100 rounds of ammunition.
Magwaza said a suspect was also found hiding in the bush with an AK47 and 60 rounds of ammunition.
In a separate incident, police arrested three suspects and recovered eight firearms in the Melmoth area.
Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said the men aged between 50 and 61, were found in the Makhasani area.
“During the operation, police recovered five homemade firearms, one homemade shotgun, one .38 special revolver, one pistol and ammunition,” she said.
