Workers from North West Transport Investment (NTI) have taken their fight over months-long non-payment of salaries to the African National Congress’ National General Council (NGC) gathering at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

“Mr President, how long are you going to turn a blind eye on the poor NTI employees? We are fully aware you are aware of this horrible matter of NTI salaries”; “14 months working without salaries is not child’s play”; and “Employees committed suicide due to non-payments,” read some of the placards carried by protesters.

Scores of workers from Hammanskraal, Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Mabopane are picketing outside the venue, demanding to be addressed by ANC leaders, whom they accuse of ignoring their plight.

Mosiwa Phiri, chairperson of the NTI Council under Satawu, says workers have reached breaking point.

“We have been neglected for too long and we have been going to court in and out and that process is frustrating these workers. We need to have a life like people who are earning salaries every month,” Phiri says. “Now, we have been ‘deposited’ business rescuer who is not talking to the workers, instead he is using legal departments to talk to us. We must get salaries like everybody. We must have benefits like everybody.”

Phiri says some employees have gone without pay for up to 14 months.

“We have got families to feed. That is why we are here. We need to talk to the national leadership that comrades are letting us down. Even though Satawu is trying to speak to them they don’t listen,” he adds.

NTI has long been plagued by financial troubles and governance failures. Last year, some employees spent the festive season camping outside the North West Provincial Legislature in Mahikeng in a bid to force payment of outstanding salaries.

Earlier this year, the North West Transport Management Department stepped in to assist some of the affected workers.
