Alleged car thief arrested following recovery of stolen BMW X5 in Limpopo

A 43-year-old man was arrested during a joint operation carried at Ha-Mashau village situated in the Vhembe District of Limpopo province.

This initiative stemmed from intelligence received regarding the whereabouts of a suspect linked to the theft of a silver grey BMW X5 SUV, which had been reported stolen just a week earlier in the Waterval policing area.

The operation involved a collaborative effort by various police units, including Levubu Detectives, Waterval police, the Thohoyandou Vehicle Identification Safeguarding Unit (VIS), and the Vhembe Flying Squad.

The joint task force, including members from the Ṱhohoyaṋdou Tracing Task Team, swiftly mobilised to apprehend the suspect after identifying the location where the stolen vehicle was believed to be concealed.

As the police approached the suspect’s residence, their suspicions were confirmed when they discovered the stolen BMW X5 parked in the yard.

The vehicle, valued at an impressive R460,000, was seized on-site. Upon interrogation, the suspect was unable to produce any legitimate documentation for the vehicle or provide satisfactory answers regarding its ownership, leading to his immediate arrest on charges of possessing suspected stolen property.

The 43-year-old man is set to appear before the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 December 2025, where he will face formal charges.

Law enforcement officials have stated that investigations are ongoing.
