Today's weather: What South Africans can expect
South Africans should brace for an unsettled end to the week as widespread showers and thunderstorms develop across large parts of the country on Friday, with severe weather expected in some central and northern regions.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of the North West and the Northern Cape interior, where storms may lead to localised flooding of susceptible roads and settlements, excessive lightning, hail and damaging winds.
These storms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening as heat and moisture combine over the interior.
Rain chances will be high across much of the northern and central interior. Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and parts of the North West face scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms, with rain probabilities around 60% in many areas. Localised downpours may result in temporary disruptions, especially during peak travel times.
The Free State and parts of the Northern Cape can expect isolated to scattered showers and storms, with rain chances between 30 and 60%. Some of these storms may be strong, particularly in areas bordering the warning zone.
Along the eastern parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape interior, isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected, with rain chances of around 30%.
Coastal areas of the Eastern Cape may see brief showers, while much of the southern and south-western Cape, including the Western Cape, is expected to remain dry with little to no rainfall forecast.
Residents in areas affected by thunderstorms are advised to remain weather aware, avoid flooded roads and take precautions against lightning and strong winds as summer storms continue to make their presence felt.
