Laborie Estate closed after fire destroys restaurant and accommodation
Laborie Estate in Paarl has been closed following a fire on Saturday, December 21, 2025, that resulted in the loss of Giovanni’s Restaurant and eight Werf accommodation rooms.
The estate said it was “deeply saddened by the incident, but above all, relieved to confirm that no injuries were reported and that all individuals on site are safe.”
It extended its “sincere thanks to the firefighters, emergency services, and first responders for their swift and professional response, as well as to the wider community for their support.”
“The cause of the fire is currently under investigation,” the estate added.
“Our immediate focus is on safety, securing the affected areas and assessing the impact on the estate. Further updates regarding operations will be shared once assessments are complete.
”This is a difficult day for Laborie Estate and we appreciate the understanding and respect shown as we move forward.”
Drakenstein Municipality’s Fire and Rescue Services said the fire broke out shortly after midday. Additional support came from Stellenbosch Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, the Fire Protection Association (FPA), and DFW Fire & Rescue NPC.
The Cucina Di Giovanni restaurant and the first wing of the accommodation facilities were destroyed, while crews worked to prevent the flames from reaching the historic Manor House and the second accommodation wing, said the municipality.
The municipality said helicopters deployed by the FPA assisted with aerial water drops, but strong winds made firefighting efforts difficult.
”Wind conditions remain strong, but all teams are fully alert and monitoring the area closely to prevent any flare-ups.”
Drakenstein Municipality later said the fire had been successfully contained and that mop-up operations were continuing, with fire crews remaining on site into the night to monitor the area and prevent flare-ups.
The Manor House and second accommodation wing were successfully protected, said the municipality.
The municipality confirmed that the cause of the fire remains unknown and that an investigation will be conducted once mop-up operations have been completed.
