How to protect your pets from fireworks stress this New Year
As South Africans prepare to welcome 2026, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPSCA) has issued a set of practical tips for pet owners to help protect their animals from the stress and dangers caused by fireworks.
Pets can become frightened by loud noises, bright lights, and sudden bursts, which may lead to panic, injury, or escape.
The SPSCA has shared the following tips for keeping pets safe during New Year festivities:
Keep pets indoors – Confine dogs, cats, and other animals to a secure, quiet area of the house. Close windows, doors, and curtains to reduce noise and visual stimuli.
Provide a safe space – Create a comfortable area with their bed, toys, and familiar items. This can help pets feel secure and reduce anxiety.
Avoid leaving pets alone – Stay with your animals where possible or ensure someone they trust is nearby. Companionship can help calm their nerves.
Distract with sounds and lights – Playing soft music, turning on the television, or using white noise can mask the sound of fireworks and make pets feel safer.
Keep identification on pets – Ensure dogs and cats have up-to-date ID tags or microchips in case they escape in panic.
Avoid punishments – Never scold or punish pets for fearful behaviour; it can increase their anxiety.
Consult a veterinarian if necessary – If pets have severe anxiety, ask a vet about safe calming methods or products that may help them cope during fireworks.
