People’s poet Diana Ferrus in critical condition

The family of renowned poet and cultural icon Dr Diana Ferrus, 72, has shared a message of cautious hope, saying her recovery is progressing “slowly but positively” as she continues to fight for her health.

In a statement released on her behalf, the family confirmed that while Ferrus remains in a critical condition, there have been encouraging signs of improvement.

“Her recovery is progressing slowly but positively. She remains in a critical condition but shows noticeable improvement each day, her cognitive function is improving well, and her movement has strengthened,” the family said.

Ferrus is revered as the “people’s poet”, a writer whose work has given voice to the silenced and the dispossessed.

She is internationally celebrated for her poem I’ve come to take you home, written for Sarah Baartman, which played a pivotal role in the repatriation of Baartman’s remains from France in 2002.

Her body of work centres on memory, justice, womanhood and healing, and has cemented her status as one of South Africa’s most important literary and cultural figures. In recognition of her profound contribution to literature, heritage and human dignity.

Stellenbosch University awarded Ferrus an honorary doctorate in 2022, acknowledging her influence far beyond the written word.

The family has, however, appealed for space and calm as Ferrus continues her recovery, explaining that even brief interactions can be physically demanding.

“We respectfully ask for everyone’s understanding that Dr Ferrus still becomes fatigued very quickly, even when communicating with people,” they said, requesting that visits be kept short and peaceful, with no photographs taken and no children visiting except immediate family.

They also asked the public to refrain from requesting photographs at this stage, stressing that Ferrus’ energy must be reserved entirely for healing.

Despite the challenges, the family said Ferrus is deeply aware of the outpouring of love surrounding her.

“As a family, we would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone for the abundance of prayers, messages, love, and well wishes. Dr Ferrus feels and deeply appreciates this support.”
