Horror in Poortjie: Five arrested after two women kidnapped, murdered, and dumped

Five suspects were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the hijacking, kidnapping, and murder of two women whose bodies were found in Poortjie, near Orange Farms in Gauteng.

The women were reported missing on New Year’s Eve.

After a ransom demand was made to one victim’s mother, police upgraded the case to hijacking and kidnapping.

Their partially decomposed bodies were discovered in an open veld on Thursday last week.

“Resources were mobilised to trace and rescue the victims and their partially decomposed bodies were discovered in an open veld at Poortjie,” police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said.

Using intelligence information, police tracked down the five suspects and recovered an unlicensed firearm.

“Through intelligence information, the team of investigators managed to trace and arrest five suspects and recover an unlicensed firearm on [Tuesday],” Nevhuhulwi said.

Four suspects were arrested in Evaton, and the fifth in Germiston.

Investigators also traced the victims’ vehicle to Brits, where it was found abandoned at a car wash.

“A prelimenery investigation led the team to Brits were they discovered the victims’ vehicle abandoned at a car wash,” Nevhuhulwi said.

“The vehicle was fixed with false number plates but had the correct disc.

“The firearm will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether it was been used in the commission of crime.”

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has welcomed the arrest.

All five suspects are expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
