Off-duty Western Cape police officer shot dead in Browns Farm attack

Western Cape police are mourning the death of a police officer who was shot and killed in Browns Farm on Monday evening, with detectives from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) now probing the case.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the 48-year-old officer, who was attached to the Rapid Rail Unit in Pinelands, was off duty at the time of the attack.

It is alleged that two unidentified suspects shot him in the upper body before fleeing the scene.

He died at the scene.

“A murder docket has been opened, and DPCI detectives have instituted an investigation,”  Potelwa said.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

“The motive for the incident is the subject of the police investigation currently underway,” Potelwa said, adding that “no arrests have been effected yet”.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, expressed his condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues.

“The identity of the deceased member is withheld until his next of kin has been informed,” said Potelwa.
