Yvonne Chaka Chaka urges South Africans to support flood victims in Limpopo and Mpumalanga
As devastating floods continue to upend lives in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka has issued an emotional appeal for public support, highlighting the growing humanitarian needs in affected communities.
Chaka Chaka said the impact on ordinary people has been overwhelming, with families losing everything they own.
“We have managed to collect 100 shoes for those people in need in Limpopo and Mpumalanga,” she said, explaining that relentless rainfall and flooding had washed away homes, clothing and basic necessities.
She painted a stark picture of children bearing the brunt of the disaster, with schooling disrupted as families struggle to meet even their most basic needs.
Through the Princess of Africa Foundation, working alongside Above Normal, Chaka Chaka has launched a humanitarian campaign to support flood victims with immediate, practical assistance.
She stressed that the focus is on restoring dignity rather than raising funds.
“We don’t need money, we just need perishables, food, clothing or anything you can help with,” she said.
The government recently officially declared a national disaster in response to catastrophic severe weather and flooding.
The classification was confirmed by Dr Elias Sithole, Head of the National Disaster Management Centre, who cited the immense scale of destruction as the reason for escalating the crisis to national status.
“I regard this occurrence as a disaster and, in terms of Section 23(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2002. I classify the disaster as a national disaster,” Sithole said in the official directive.
