Ex-teacher opens fire at Eastern Cape school, dies on scene
Eastern Cape police have launched an investigation into a fatal shooting that left one teacher dead and two others injured at Ntabankulu Primary School on Wednesday, January 22, 2026.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the incident occurred at approximately 12 pm when a former teacher at the school allegedly forced his way onto the premises by cutting through the perimeter fence.
The suspect was reportedly out on bail in connection with sexual assault charges involving learners.
Gantana said that the suspect proceeded directly to the school kitchen, where he opened fire on three teachers.
“One educator was declared dead at the scene, while two others sustained injuries and were taken for medical treatment. After the attack, the suspect turned the firearm on himself and was also declared deceased at the scene, added Gantana.
Meanwhile, police have cordoned off the school as forensic experts process the crime scene. A comprehensive investigation is underway, including an inquiry into how the suspect allegedly breached his bail conditions.
Acting provincial police commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, condemned the attack and extended condolences to those affected.
“The SAPS wishes to extend condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased educator. Our thoughts are also with the injured victims, and we wish them a full recovery. We condemn this violent act in the strongest terms,” she said.
