Elderly woman rushed to hospital after crashing into Super Spar in Durban

A woman was rushed to hospital after crashing into a Super Spar supermarket on Pelican Drive in the Yellow Wood Park area, south of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the incident occurred on Monday before 11am.

“Upon arrival, paramedics discovered that the vehicle had lost control and collided with a popular local shop, coming to rest inside the store.

“The driver, a woman believed to be in her sixties, is suspected to have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash,” said Jamieson.

Jamieson added that paramedics stabilised the elderly woman on scene before transporting her to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

He said circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear. However, police officers were on the scene and will be conducting a formal investigation.

Meanwhile, a collision between a truck and car on the M7 Pinetown-bound carriageway, just before the N2 Bridge near the Bluff, has left two people dead and two others injured.

Emergency services encountered a chaotic scene on Sunday morning, with both vehicles having left the roadway. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Jamieson described a chaotic scene on arrival.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as they found that a truck and a light motor vehicle had collided before both left the road,” he said.

The eThekwini Fire Department was immediately called in to assist as paramedics made their way to the wreckage. The light motor vehicle was found overturned, with two occupants trapped inside.

“Paramedics and firefighters worked to gain entry into the vehicle and found a male in his 60s and a female in her 40s who had sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them, and they were declared deceased on the scene.”

The truck driver and a passenger were located down an embankment. Due to the terrain, a rope rescue system had to be set up to bring them to the roadside.

“Advanced Life Support Paramedics stabilised both of them on scene before they were taken to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required,” Jamieson added.
