Limpopo mom welcomes conjoined twins, babies doing well
A 29-year-old woman from Limpopo has given birth to male conjoined twins joined at the abdomen at Mankweng Tertiary Hospital.
The babies were delivered on January 28 after the mother was referred from Maphutha Malatjie Hospital, according to Limpopo Department of Health spokesperson Neil Shikwambana.
Shikwambana said the diagnosis of conjoined twins was made during labour, prompting an urgent transfer to Mankweng Tertiary Hospital for specialised care and delivery.
“The twins were successfully delivered and are currently stable, receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit,” he said.
“Initial assessments indicate that the babies are joined at the abdomen.”
He added that further evaluations are being conducted by neonatologists and paediatric surgeons to define the twins’ anatomy and develop a comprehensive management plan.
The mother is reported to be in good condition and is receiving care from relevant specialists.
On Monday, Limpopo MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego and Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba visited Mankweng Hospital to express support to hospital management, clinical staff, and the mother.
The department said following the delivery, the twins were admitted to the Neonatal High Care Unit, where they continue to receive close monitoring and specialised care.
“At present, the twins are clinically stable and progressing well,” the department said.
A multidisciplinary medical team comprising specialists from various disciplines has been established to manage the case.
“The team will meet weekly to conduct thorough assessments, plan ongoing care, and prepare for a possible surgical separation when clinically appropriate,” the department said.
