SANRAL warns of temporary road and lane closures at Dr Chota Motala Interchange
Lanes at the Dr Chota Motala interchange in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, will be closed to traffic to allow for the replacement of bridge parapets.
The South African National Roads Agency announced that the construction limits for the ongoing parapet replacement works extend from Masukwana Street along Dr Chota Motala Road, ending at Willowton Road.
SANRAL KwaZulu-Natal’s Project Manager, Serisha Sukraj, explained that as part of the bridge repairs, several temporary lane closures will be implemented on the interchange and its immediate feeder roads within the defined construction area.
“These closures will occur at different times to allow essential maintenance activities to be carried out, aimed at preserving and improving regional road infrastructure. The planned construction period is from February 5, 2026, to February 25, 2026.
Temporary lane closures at the five interchange bridges sites will start from Masukwana Street up to Willowton Road when travelling along Dr Chota Motala from CBD towards Northdale/ Mountain Rise,” Sukraj said.
During this period, traffic will be accommodated within narrowed lanes through the designated construction area. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to plan their routes accordingly and to anticipate potential delays.

Temporary lane closures will also be in place on the N3 flyover from Dr Chota Motala Road to the N3 Harrismith northbound carriageway.
Sukraj urged motorists and pedestrians to adhere to posted road signage and observe the reduced speed limits when approaching and travelling through the construction zone.
Allowing additional travel time is recommended to ensure a smoother journey through the affected area.
