Amathole District boosts water infrastructure budget by 10%

The Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape has increased its budget for the maintenance of water infrastructure by 10 percent. This is to ensure that there are no leaks as the local authority is experiencing a drought. Four out of the six local municipalities under the district are facing severe drought conditions, with some dams in towns such as Bedford and Kei Mouth already dried up.

The executive mayor of the district, Anele Ntsangani, says it is not a matter of non-maintenance but a problem of a low budget.
” We have since decided as council to increase the budget for maintenance so we are beginning to be serious about and the issue of non-maintenance will be a thing of the past.”
