Biggar backs Edwards to rally Wales

Dan Biggar believes Dan Edwards has the character to handle the heat of the Wales No 10 jersey, even as Welsh rugby battles one of its most turbulent periods.

Wales host an in-form France in Cardiff on Sunday, reeling from a 48-7 hammering by England and with uncertainty swirling off the field.

The Welsh Rugby Union has begun the process of cutting one of its four professional clubs, with the Ospreys under threat, while only the Scarlets, Dragons and Cardiff are guaranteed to remain beyond 2027.

Against that backdrop, Ospreys flyhalf Edwards is set to start against Les Bleus – a daunting assignment for the latest playmaker tasked with steering one of rugby’s most iconic jerseys.

“He’s got a little bit of a swag about him,” Wales and Ospreys great Biggar told AFP. “He’s got some confidence which I think you need.

“He has got the potential, he has got the character to wear some criticism, some tough times and come out the other end.”

Edwards follows a storied line of Welsh No 10s, from Barry John and Phil Bennett to Biggar himself. But this is a Wales side short on wins and confidence, without a Six Nations victory since 2023 and fresh off a heavy defeat at Twickenham.

Coach Steve Tandy’s team now face defending champions France, who opened with a 36-14 win over Ireland.

“I can guarantee you there will be nobody in Wales working harder than what he is to make sure that Wales are more competitive and get results,” Biggar said.

“I’m sure he will get that team improved. It’s just a little bit of a longer process than he expected.”
