Dry taps in Durban: Residents struggle as algae outbreak chokes water supply
Durban residents are battling dry taps and frustrating water cuts as a toxic algae outbreak and soaring temperatures cripple supply across large parts of eThekwini.
In an urgent notice, the city confirmed widespread disruption, warning that multiple reservoirs, particularly those fed by the Southern Aqueduct are under severe pressure.
Algae outbreak chokes water production according to the municipality.
“This disruption is due to reduced input from our bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water, which is experiencing algae-related challenges at Reservoir 2 of the Durban Heights Treatment Works,” said the city.
It explained that algae blooms have slashed production capacity, cutting the volume of water flowing into the city’s network.
At the same time, an intense heatwave has sent water demand soaring, leaving reservoirs struggling to cope.
To avoid a total system collapse, officials are implementing emergency rationing measures.
Certain reservoir outlets are being closed at night and reopened in the morning to prioritise peak demand.
Water tankers have also been dispatched to assist affected communities.
But the city is pleading with residents to cut back immediately. “The municipality appeals to all residents to reduce water consumption.”
Officials stressed that responsible water use is critical to allow reservoirs to recover and ensure fair distribution during this strained period.
The outages and intermittent supply are affecting vast swathes of Durban, including:
Chatsworth (multiple reservoirs impacting Arena Park, Croftdene, Montford, Silverglen, Westcliff, and more)
Shallcross and Klaarwater
Queensburgh and Moseley Park
Westville and Berea West
uMlazi Sections A through CC
Folweni, Ensimbini, and the surrounding rural areas
Industrial zones such as Mariann Industrial Park and Wiltshirt Factories
Entire residential sections in uMlazi, Chatsworth, and surrounding suburbs are experiencing pressure drops, evening shutdowns, and in some cases, complete outages.
The Municipality has apologised for the disruption and is urging residents to report faults and stay informed.
