Man fatally mauled by pit bulls – Why neighbours say this wasn’t the first incident

A 39-year-old man has died following an alleged attack by two pit bull dogs in Vryburg, North West, on New Year’s Day.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane said the victim sustained injuries to his hands and legs during the attack. He was taken to hospital by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) at about 2.30am on Thursday but succumbed to his injuries on Friday evening.

It is revealed that the victim, reportedly a Pakistani national, was renting accommodation at the property where the incident occurred.

Police became aware of the matter after receiving an inquest report from a local hospital. Officers who responded were taken to a surgical ward, where the man was found unresponsive and later certified dead.

Preliminary investigations revealed that this was not the first incident in which the dogs allegedly attacked tenants at the premises, and there is a pending case that is due to be heard before the local Magistrates’ Court in February. The dogs were euthanised on Saturday, 03 January 2026, after consultation with the owner. No arrests have been made at this stage, and an inquest is being investigated,” Tselanyane noted.

A related matter is expected to be heard in the local magistrate’s court in February.

The case adds to mounting concerns over serious bull attacks reported in various parts of the country.
