Nine foreign nationals nabbed for illegal mining in Mpumalanga
Nine Mozambican nationals have been arrested for illegal mining in Mashobota, near Ngodwana in Mpumalanga.
The arrests were made during Operation Vala Umgodi, which was intelligence-driven. The operation followed sporadic shootouts between rival illegal mining gangs.
At least two bullet-riddled bodies were discovered in the area along the N4 Schoemanskloof road since Monday.
The company that manages the N4 toll route, the Trans African Concession was forced to close the road following the gun fight.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Donald Mdluli says police also confiscated chemicals believed to be used to refine gold bearing materials.
Mdluli says, “The arrests of the suspects is one of the disruptive activities to destabilise illegal mining activities in the province. During the arrest they were pendukas as well some chemicals were confiscated. These chemicals are believe to be used for refining gold bearing materials. The arrest demonstrates the police unwavering commitment and people should expect more of this activities.”
