Renowned sport psychologist Henning Gericke has thrown his full weight behind beleaguered Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann.

He insists the current struggles at Loftus are part of a necessary transition rather than a cause for panic.

“There are challenges, and that’s often what happens when a team takes a new direction,” Gericke told Netwerk24.

He pointed to Bulls history as a reminder that early pain does not rule out long-term success.

“Remember, Heyneke Meyer lost everything in his first season at Loftus, and later became the architect of a championship team.”

Gericke was also quick to stress that his support for Ackermann does not come at the expense of former coach Jake White.

“I believe 300% in Ackers. I worked well with Jake and I will always hold him in high regard,” he said. “Jake was very good for the Bulls, but the team needed change. Ackers is the right man for that change, and the success will come.”

Beyond tactics and systems, Gericke highlighted Ackermann’s character and connection with the playing group as a key strength.

“He is a good, faith-driven person with wonderful values, and the players connect with him. I experience this firsthand. That said, the team urgently needs a win.”

CHAMPIONS CUP POOL 4: Bulls need big dose of luck

The Bulls are looking for their first win of a disappointing Investec Champions Cup campaign against Pau at the Stade du Hameau on Friday night. The French club is second on the Top 14 log and beat the Scarlets in Llanelli on Saturday.

Ackermann’s men then travel to Edinburgh to resume their Vodacom URC campaign.

The Bulls are on a seven-match losing streak across competitions.
