WATCH | Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo to face Ad Hoc Committee
Crime Intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo will appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on Thursday as hearings continue into alleged corruption, political interference, and sabotage within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Khumalo, who will testify over two days, is expected to provide detailed evidence on interference in investigations, internal sabotage, and Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which he previously led.
His appearance follows that of former acting National Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, who testified on Wednesday about attempts to remove him, rogue units operating within SAPS, and political pressure affecting criminal investigations.
Khumalo has testified twice before the Madlanga Commission, outlining efforts to obstruct investigations into organised crime and unlawful appointments within the police.
These issues culminated in his June arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).
He maintained the arrest was linked to his opposition to political interference.
He has also provided evidence regarding the so-called “Big Five” organised crime syndicate, which he claims has infiltrated police structures.
Additionally, Khumalo alleged the existence of payments connected to Minister Mchunu, reportedly routed through the Minister’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde.
The committee is expected to question him about his working relationship with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and the circumstances surrounding his 2025 arrest.
Khumalo’s testimony comes amid growing scrutiny of SAPS and the ANC government, as corruption allegations continue to undermine public confidence in law enforcement.
Parliament’s hearings aim to establish the extent of internal interference and accountability failures within the police, with Khumalo’s testimony seen as central to understanding how Crime Intelligence was affected.
The hearings are scheduled to continue into Friday, with MPs probing both the alleged misconduct and the systemic challenges within SAPS highlighted by Khumalo’s testimony.
